French onion is one of my favorite savory flavors. It goes well in rice because the rice will absorb all of that wonderful flavor. With the mix of fresh onion, and the onion soup, you get a wonderful oniony flavor.

You can even sneak in some chicken into this Instant Pot rice if you want to make a complete meal out of it! See the recipe card notes for the details.

Instant Pot French Onion Rice has a quick 3 minute cook time and a 9 minute natural release. If you use a rice other than white long grain rice, the cook time may change.

  • 1(10.5 oz) canFrench Onion Soup
  • 1 ¼cupsBeef Broth
  • ¼cupWater
  • 1(4 oz) canSliced Mushrooms,drained (optional)
  • ½medSweet Onion, sliced thinly and cut into quarter moon shapes
  • 1TbspDried or Fresh Parsley Flakes
  • 1lg cloveGarlic,finely minced
  • 4TbspMelted Butter
  • ¼tspKosher Salt
  • ¼tspPepper

Instructions

  1. Add all of the ingredients in the inner liner pot of the pressure cooker. Stir well.

  2. Close the lid and set the steam release knob to the Sealing position.

  3. Press the Pressure Cook/Manual button or dial.

  4. Then press the +/- button or dial and select 3 minutes. High pressure.

  5. The pot will take about 5 minutes to come to pressure.

  6. When the cook time has finished, let the pot sit undisturbed for 9 minutes (9 minute Natural Release).

  7. Turn the steam release knob to the Venting position to release the remaining pressure/steam.

  8. When the pin in the lid drops back down, open the lid carefully.

  9. Fluff the rice with a fork, and gently stir.

  10. Serve the rice hot, with extra parsley on top, if desired.

Recipe Notes

Make in the 3 qt, 5 qt, 6 qt, or 8 qt pot.

You can add chicken to this if you want a one-pot meal. For an average sized 8 oz skinless/boneless breast, cut it in fourths. This will ensure it cooks without drying out. If the pieces are pretty thick, cut them just a little smaller, maybe in sixths and toss them in with the rice.

I made this but used cream of onion soup instead. My instant pot gave me a burn message. Either I did something wrong or this recipe is not good.

The first one. The recipe is good. Cream soup is not on the list. You need regular French onion soup so there is liquid to bring the pot to pressure and cook the rice in.

If I have an 8-quart IP, do I need to increase the liquid?

    Reply

    • Sandy

No, because the rice to liquid ratio is important to keep. Maybe make an extra 1/2 cup (with extra 1/2 cup liquid) to fill it up more if you are concerned.

Can this be made in the 3 qt. Mini using the recipe as it is or do changes in amounts and/or time need to be made? It would be helpful if you indicated in the notes if a recipe can be used in the Mini as is or showing what changes need to be done (if simple), Thanks for the Mini recipes you have already added for us Mini users!

I’m confused. This recipe does not indicate wether it is Mini or larger. Is it written as a mini recipe or does it need conversions?

      • Sandy

This is for a 3qt or 6 qt.

I don't have a pressure cooker, can you make it on the stove top or in a slow cooker?

    Reply

    • Sandy

Actually you can bake it in the oven. 350° for 30 minutes to an hour, depending on your oven. I think a 8"x8" baking dish will work.

If I want to double this recipe, do I need to adjust the time? Hoping to make this for a barbecue this weekend, it looks delicious!

Nope, keep the time the same! Enjoy!
