Guide to Biomes in Subnautica (2024)

rom most visited to least visited, a list of all the biomes with explanations. I'm combining all of my playthroughs together to form the list.

Safe Shallows - Pretty obvious one. Every run starts here, it's where I make my first little habitat, and it's where I get resources early game.

Grassy Plateaus - I've based here a lot. It's where I get my quartz, and the copper + silver from reefbacks is nice.

NW Mushroom Forest - I've built a lot of bases here too, but a couple less than the Grassy Plateaus. I get my lithium early game from here. It's really pretty, and I look for cyclops bridge and hull fragments here. I also have to go through it to get to the Northern Blood Kelp Zone.

Kelp Forest - Stalker teeth, Titanium, Sandstone outcrops, Creepvine, and wrecks with stasis rifle fragments. I come over quite often.

Lost River - I spend at least a few hours here every playthrough. It's where I farm most large resource deposits, and come to see the ghosties. I also make an outpost here nearly every playthrough in the junction area to recharge my cyclops' power cells on long adventures.

Grand Reef - It's full of shale outcrops and rubies, so I come here at least a couple times early to mid game. I take the lost river entrance through the here sometimes, and I've based here once or twice. Also, it's really beautiful so I take every excuse I can get to come here. I'm surprised I haven't based here more often. Also, great data boxes and fragments.

Northern Blood Kelp Zone - Only up this high because I travel through here to get to the lost river a lot. This entrance and the grand reef entrance are the only entrances I take to it, but I take this entrance much more often.

Lava Zones - I spend about 40 minutes here every playthrough. I've never based here though, and after the one time I go there to get the ion battery blueprint and open the teleporters I never return besides to give the enzymes to the sea emperor.

Jellyshroom Caves - I spend a while here every playthrough getting magnetite and scanning the Degasi base. I also based here once, but I didn't play on that save file too much so it doesn't count as quite as much.

Underwater Islands - It's where I get my cyclops engine, Grappling arm, and swim charge fin blueprints. I also poke my head in when I pass by to see the view.

Sparse Reef - Not much to say, I come here to get rubies/gel sacks and get the lifepod PDA and wreck, then never come back, except to get to the floating island.

Bulb Zone - I come here at least once to get the lifepod and wreck every playthrough, mainly because of the reinforced dive suit data box. This place is really out of the way though, so I'm unlikely to even pass through it. I'd like to base here eventually for the view, but I've yet to.

Mountains - Everything I can find here, I can find in places that are less leviathan ridden. I avoid this place, and the only reason this is so high up is because I pass by it to get to the mountain island and skim the edges for easy fragments.

Crash Zone - I take a 2 minute trip to get in the aurora, a 2 minute trip to get back, and only come back if I want supply crate loot like power cells and nutrient bars.

NE Mushroom Forest - I pretty much never go here. It's a wayyyyy worse version of the NW Mushroom Forest. It's super out of the way, and there's reapers bordering the crash zone.

Dunes - I avidly avoid this place, and only come here in the late game to grab quartz if I'm making a big glass base.

Sea Treader's Path - I've been here only a couple times. Why? I'm terrified. In the night, this place is PITCH BLACK, At least in my experience. Also, warpers. More detail into why I hate warpers coming up.

Blood Kelp Trench - It's dark, deep, and there's hardly any room to maneuver. That wouldn't be so bad, if it weren't for the warpers. I'm terrified of warpers. They deal a lot of damage, and completely ignore the fact that your in a Prawn suit/seamoth. I grow to believe that the Prawn suit is my safe space, that nothing can hurt me, yet warpers come along and take away half my healthbar and teleport me outside of my safe zone.

Crag Field - I've came here a total of ONE time. And that was for 2 minutes to yoink the Unusual Doll from Lifepod 7. I've been here so little, I can't even explain why I haven't been here because I barely know anything about it. I've been here so little, when I drew the subnautica map from memory I forgot it existed.

So, what are your thoughts? You don't have to give lengthy explanations like I did, I'd just like to here what biomes you've been to the most/least.
